What is Twill weave?

To understand Twill we need to understand how weaving is done. In a typical weaving setup, or a loom, there are parallel vertical threads under tension called warp. Then there are horizontal threads that snake through warp threads, that can go under or over. This is called weft thread. If the thread goes one over and one under the warp thread, this is called a simple weave (also known as a plain weave or tabby). If it goes one over and three under, this is called a 1/3 twill weave. If it goes two over and two under, it is called a 2/2 twill weave, which creates a balanced cloth. You can draw this by hand and you will notice a diagonal pattern appearing, which is characteristic of twill weave. This allows for a higher thread count, which is calculated by looking at a one square inch piece of cloth and then counting both warp and weft threads. Since twill allows for some warp thread to be together without any weft thread in between them and vice versa, this makes the fabric much denser compared to a plain weave.

Twill's higher density makes it a suitable fabric for bed and bath linens, upholstery and denim. This lends the fabric a lot of structure to drape well, and opacity to make it suitable for certain heavy-duty garments, such as workwear and blue jeans, where durability and coverage are essential.

  • Packing and Density: Because the weft "floats" over multiple warp ends, twill can be packed tighter than plain weave. For example, the same yarn that requires a sett (ends per inch) of 12 for a plain weave might be set at 14 for a twill to achieve the correct density.

  • The Diagonal Rule: A hallmark of a well-woven twill is maintaining a 45-degree diagonal line, which serves as a visual guide for the weaver to ensure an even beat.

  • Variations in Pattern: Beyond basic 2/2 or 1/3 structures, twill offers nearly infinite design possibilities. Point twills can create "bird’s eye" or "rosepath" patterns, while broken twills—where the diagonal sequence is intentionally interrupted—result in classic designs like herringbone.

  • Distinct Surfaces: In 1/3 or 3/1 twills, the fabric often has two distinct sides: one dominant in weft floats and the other appearing more warp-dominant, a feature frequently utilized in clothing fabrics.
